About Buí

The ancient Irish witch Buí has many names, including the Hag or the Cailleach (which literally just means hag or witch in Irish). She is associated with the Boyne Valley in County Meath. It is said that she is a manifestation of the Cailleach Beara, one of the oldest figures in Irish mythological history.

She is closely associated with the Loughcrew passage tombs, which are aligned with the Spring Equinox. It is said that these tombs were created when The Cailleach Buí was jumping from peak to peak in an attempt to get great power. She had an apron full of stones, which scattered onto the land as she hopped creating the tombs on the peaks.
.
There are many more stories about her, which include other Irish gods such as Lugh. And it is thought that she is buried beneath the mound at Knowth. Her seat, called the Hag’s Chair, can be seen at the Loughcrew passage tombs.
